If you have kids, chances are you take them to the doctor for regular checkups, but fewer people do the same for their pets. But in some ways, getting a pet checked out is just as important. After all, pets don't actually talk, and it can be difficult for the average person to read behavioral cues and what they need. At All Friends Veterinary Hospital, in East Islip, NY we strive to work with pet parents to see that the care needs of their pets are met, regardless of whether or not those pets are sick.
One of the big reasons why pets need to see a veterinarian for a check-up on a regular basis is because the aging process for pets is generally much faster than it is for humans. Most people have heard of the concept of "dog years," which equates one human year to 7 dog years. This is actually an oversimplification. Puppies and kittens reach maturity much fast than humans, by a year they are essentially "teenagers." Aging slows down after that, but size matters too. For example, large dogs age faster than small do, and may be considered "seniors" by the time they turn six.
At All Friends Veterinary Hospital, we strive to be thorough when examining pets so that we are able to identify any areas of concern before they become major issues. We will check your pet's weight, fur, skin, behavior, eyes, ears, as well as their vital signs such as heart rate and breathing. We'll also check for any lumps or lymph nodes that could point to a bigger problem. Most often, these "head to tail" visits are over within a half hour. If they are due for vaccinations, and their overall health allows, they will receive these on their visit as well.
Some pet parents may hesitate to bring their pet in because their pet has acted uncomfortable and poorly when faced with a vet visit. Part of the reason might stem from only going to the vet when they are already feeling sick. If they are generally well, you can put treats and/or toys around the carrier in the days before their appointment, and get them used to riding in the car ahead of time. If your pet sees the vet under good circumstances, they are more likely to build a positive association.
Another way to reduce the stress of the visit is to be as prepared as possible ahead of the actual appointment. To make the transition easier from a different vet, All Friends Veterinary Hospital asks that online forms be completed to give the vet a better sense of your pet's history before coming in.
During early puppyhood wellness exams are recommended on a monthly basis, while for the average adult dog annual wellness examinations are the norm, and for middle aged or geriatric dogs semi-annual examinations are recommended. Most cats should have a well visit one to two times per year.
Paying the vet bill is harder for some people than it is for others, especially since it is hard to tell what the bill will be when you set up the appointment. For many, having pet insurance can make a big difference in keeping individual bills reasonable
The cost of a well visit for your pet can vary a lot depending on the general health of your pet, but could be a couple hundred dollars or more once everything is added up. For those who don't want to worry about coming up with a big lump sum as they are checking their pet out of the vet's office, pet insurance becomes a major consideration, as it decreases the likelihood of surprise bills.
For the charges not covered by pet insurance, credit and debit cards may be used. Some people choose to use CareCredit when they face larger or unexpected bills because payment terms are often more flexible than traditional credit cards.

I can not say enough about these wonderful people. Dr. Reda is the most compassionate veterinarian I have ever met. My beloved dog passed from cancer, but they were there every step of the way with any questions or concerns, even when they were oh vacation and I was totally distraught about it, they made sure to address my concerns and never made me feel like I was crazy. There should be more people like Dr. Reda and his staff in this business. I am forever grateful for all of you.
