As dog owners, we never want to see our pups in distress. Unfortunately, that can't always be avoided. Pets get sick, injured, and they may even need surgery. One of the main worries with surgery is anesthesia. Often, one of the questions is, how will my pet act afterwards? What's normal and what's not? Not to worry. If you are in the East Islip, NY area, we at All Friends Veterinary Hospital are here to help. Our veterinarian is here to answer your questions.
How Will My Dog Act After Anesthesia?
First, know that the risk of your pet having a serious reaction is very small. Also, your pet will stay in the vets' office to be observed for a little while after their surgery. So, by the time they get home, the chances of serious complications are rare. However, the drugs do take a while to fully leave the system and it is normal for pets to act differently. Behavior may include:
Grogginess
Your pet may be sleepy and have low energy for 12 to 36 hours after taking the drugs.
Temperature Fluctuations
The pup may have trouble regulating its body temperature for a day or two. They may be cold and shiver, then be hot and panting. Try to keep them in a room with a comfortable temperature. You can even put a blanket out that they can crawl in and out of when they want.
Sounds of Discomfort
Whining, moaning, sighing, even some crying may occur. Your pet may be experiencing some pain from the procedure or just generally feel yucky. Give them some extra scratches and reassurance.
May Be Less Likely to Listen to Commands or Be Social.
Don't be offended. Just let them be.
Trouble Standing and Getting Around
The drugs affect the nervous system. It may take a few days to fully leave your pet's system. So it's normal for them to be shaky and a bit unsteady.
